Overview
The ability of a measurement device to accurately measure a
physical quantity changes with a number of factors. Time in
service, temperature, humidity, environmental exposure, and
abuse can all affect your measurement accuracy. Calibration
attempts to decrease measurement uncertainty by comparing
your measurement device to a traceable standard.
Benefits of Calibration
To maintain your measurement accuracy, you must calibrate your
measurement device at set intervals. Calibration improves your
accuracy and ensures that your end product meets its required
specifications. Calibration also provides a number of other
benefits. When you maintain calibrated devices, you:
• Reduce measurement uncertainty
• Ensure measurement consistency
• Increase production yields
• Meet quality requirements
What Is Calibration
Calibration is the act of determining the uncertainty associated
with a measurement and, if possible, reducing that uncertainty.
This means that calibration is more than just adjusting the
measurement capability of a device. Instead, the calibration
process consists of three parts:
1. Verifing that the current measurement capability of the
measurement device is within specification. If it is out of
specification then your previous measurements – up until your
last calibration – may be suspect.
2. Adjusting the device to reduce its measurement uncertainty.
3. Verifying the measurement capability of the device to
ensure thatit is operating within specifications or to check if the
measurement uncertainty has been reduced.
International committees have created calibration guidelines,
such as ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 and ISO Guide 25, to ensure that
these steps are followed and that all calibrations are accepted
between companies and countries.
National Instruments and Calibration
Whether your calibration needs are driven by ISO 9000
requirements or by internal corporate procedures, National
Instruments offers a wide range of calibration services to
accomodate them.
Calibration Certificates
All of National Instruments products are shipped
with a Certificate of Conformance. This certificate
states that the product has been tested and
meets all of its performance standards. Our E
Series data acquisition products and instrument products also
include a Basic Calibration Certificate. The Basic Calibration
Certificate provides NIST-traceable documentation and states that
the calibration process conforms to relevant clauses of ISO9002.
If you need a higher level of certification, National Instruments
can supply ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 compliant certificates for selected
products. Visit our Web site at

Calibration Executive
National Instruments Calibration Executive
provides an integrated environment for verifying
and adjusting National Instruments measurement
devices. The software has a user-friendly interface that you operate
in either automatic or manual mode. The Calibration Executive also
provides calibration report storage and retrieval. The Calibration
Executive is designed using National Instruments NI-VISA, IVI, and
TestStand technologies.
With the Calibration Executive modular environment, you can
add new calibration procedures as they become available. You
store calibration reports in an ODBC-compliant database for easy
access by other programs.
Periodic Calibration
You can return any of our measurement products to National
Instruments for recalibration. Depending on your calibration
requirements, we can supply our basic NIST-traceable calibration
certificate or, for selected products, an ANSI/NCSL Z540-1
compliant certificate. If you require calibration services in
your local area, we also offer calibration through metrology
laboratories in selected countries. More information on our services
can be found on our Web site at
www.ni.com/calibration
Manual Calibration Procedures
For metrology laboratories and companies that maintain
calibration facilities, we offer manual calibration procedures for
selected products. These procedures eliminate the need to send
your product to National Instruments or a metrology laboratory
for calibration. However, to use these procedures, you must have
a good working knowledge of metrology and access to traceable
calibration standards. You can access our manual calibration
procedures through our Web site at
www.ni.com/calibration

Automated Calibration
Manual calibration can be time-consuming and costly. The
National Instruments Calibration Executive (see sidebar),
developed primarily for metrology laboratories, automates the
verification and adjustment of your National Instruments products.
By using the Calibration Executive, you can easily automate your
calibration operations and benefit from National Instruments
technology such as NI-VISA, IVI, and TestStand.
